Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and a Taiwan-based tech company partnered for electrosurgery device
Electrosurgery uses high-frequency alternating polarity electrical current to desiccate, fulgurate, coagulate, and cut tissue. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure and can leave only small amounts of blood in the patient's body. Because it is performed without using anesthetics, it can be used to make precise cuts and repairs. It also causes limited bleeding. It is a safe, effective way to remove tumors.
When using electrosurgery, a high-frequency alternating current passes through the tissue to cut or coagulate it. The electrical current passes through electrodes in either a loop or a multipolar configuration. The electrodes are activated by a footswitch or handpiece switch. The voltage generated by the high-frequency current creates heat in the tissue, which allows the surgeon to cut or coagulate tissue.
There are two types of electrodes used during surgery. One is called the active electrode and the other is known as the dispersive electrode. The active electrode is connected to an electrosurgical power unit. The second type of electrode is used in the bipolar procedure. The bipolar instrument is connected to the ESU through a direct current cautery probe. The dispersive electrode, or ground pad, is used to protect the underlying tissue from thermal injury. Although electrosurgical devices are highly effective, they are incredibly dangerous if misused. Advancement in technology has led to the development of advanced device.
For instance, recently, Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and a Taiwan-based tech company jointly announced that they will collaborate on a next-generation integrated electrosurgery system and co-develop a hybrid energy system for minimally invasive surgery. Key players are also involved in adopting various growth strategies such as merger &acquisition. For instance, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. announced that it has acquired Megadyne Medical Products, Inc., a privately held medical device company that develops, manufactures and markets electrosurgical tools used in operating rooms worldwide.
