It is a kind of internal combustion where well-mixed, liquefied oxidizer and fuel are compressed at the exact point of auto-ignition. In homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI), an exothermic reaction converts energy in an engine to heat and work. The term "homogenous combustion" (also called "pumping chemistry") refers to the process by which an exothermic chemical reaction causes the fuel and oxidizer to be compressed together at the exact point of ignition.

The term pumping refers to the way that the pressure inside a closed system increases to cause the gas in it to expand. The increase in pressure created in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines occurs because the fuel (in this case oil) is mixed with air at the exact point where the combustion occurs. When the fuel mixture burns at the exact point of ignition, the hot gasses are allowed to escape from the engine. In regions such as the United States, the increasing prevalence of diesel cars has increased the requirements for homogeneous charge compression ignition. For instance, according to American Automobile Association, there are over 500,000 diesel cars in the U.S.

In current fuel-efficiency campaigns, it is imperative that technologies that increase fuel efficiencies, such as low emission and high-temperature gas turbines, are incorporated into existing vehicles. Without it, current vehicle fleets would not be able to reach their fuel efficiency goals. In addition to increasing fuel efficiency through this, current fuel-efficiency programs also include methods such as compression Ignition, thermal compression ignition, and spark plug ignition. This fuel-efficiency program incorporates a series of technologies that all work together to increase the efficiency of an engine.

One example of this type of technology is the homogeneous charge compression ignition system. This technology utilizes an optimized catalyst that ignites a mixture of fuel and oxygen at the point where combustion occurs. The combination of these two substances is ignited so that the entire fuel combustion process occurs at the exact point where the combustion occurs.
